Real-time chemical composition, measured in the process

OrionIR® Mid-IR Spectrometer

Real-time chemical composition, measured in the process

At 5 × 5.5 × 6 cm the OrionIR® is a fraction of the size of a traditional spectrometer. It uses no moving components and no fragile optical fibres, so you decide where and how it is deployed.

Why mid-infrared, and why transmission

Dipole moments in molecular bonds vibrate at energies that correspond to the mid-infrared region, so light passing through a sample is absorbed by the bonds that match in energy. Because those dipole moments are affected by the bond and by its surroundings, mid-IR spectroscopy identifies what is present and how much of it there is.

Measuring in transmission — rather than at a probe surface — is what lets the OrionIR® read strongly absorbing and aqueous streams that saturate a longer path. The short optical path does the work: 20 µm as standard in the 900–1800 cm⁻¹ range, with 100 µm and 200 µm options, and 25 µm as standard in the 1800–3500 cm⁻¹ range. The measurement is non-destructive, so sample integrity is preserved for further testing or downstream analysis.

What you get out of it

  • Track reactant and product concentrations live, at every stage of development and production.
  • Optimise reaction conditions with precision instead of by fixed time.
  • Detect deviations and side reactions early.
  • Accelerate development and troubleshooting.
  • Hold product quality and performance consistent.
  • Detect low concentrations of reactants and products reliably.

How it works

Getting to a number, not a spectrum

A spectrum is not an answer. We build the chemometric model that turns it into concentration for your specific chemistry.

  1. 01

    Plug in

Connect the module by USB to a computer with the software installed — in the lab or in the field.

  2. 02

    Measure on the loop

A 0.1 mL flow cell on a recirculation loop. No grab sample, no lab trip, no quench.

  3. 03

    Calibrate to your chemistry

We build and integrate calibration models directly into the software platform, so the readout is concentration.

  4. 04

    Act on it

Live data enables instant adjustment of reaction conditions for better control and faster optimisation.
