Application notes
What was measured, on what equipment, and what the data showed. We publish the ones we have run rather than the ones that would look best.
RTD validation on a coiled tubular reactor
A step-input experiment on a coiled tubular reactor using 10% acetone in ethanol as the tracer. Peak residence times aligned closely with theoretical expectation, and the RTD curves consistently captured both the primary flow behaviour and the subtler secondary features — bypassing, dispersion and tailing — that a nominal residence-time calculation cannot show.
The measurement ran live: tracer concentration plotted as it changed, with the RTD curve generated automatically at the end of the run.
What the measurement demonstrated
- Reproducible RTD curves that match theoretical expectation.
- Sensitivity to secondary flow features, not just the mean residence time.
- Tracking under varying flow conditions rather than at a single fixed rate.
- A complete run without diverting the process to an offline instrument.
Flow rates in the validation run were chosen for the experiment and are not an instrument specification — the flow path has been tested to 250 mL/min with water under non-cavitating conditions.

Request the application notes
Tell us which measurement you are working on and an engineer sends the notes that apply, usually within one business day, rather than a folder to sift through.
More notes, and yours
Further application notes exist in draft for reaction monitoring, dissolution kinetics and homogeneity endpoint detection. If one of those is the measurement you are trying to make, ask and we will send what we have.
Where a measurement is genuinely new we will run it: send your own process samples, and where it makes sense we loan the instrument so the evaluation happens on your process rather than in a demo.
