Sample the THz waveform electronically
THz time-domain spectroscopy reconstructs the electric field of a terahertz pulse by sampling it with a delayed optical probe. Conventionally that delay comes from a translation stage, which sets both the scan rate and the achievable delay range. Asynchronous optical sampling replaces the stage with a small repetition-rate offset.
Why the delay range matters here
- Spectral resolution in THz-TDS is set by the length of the recorded time window — a longer window resolves narrower features.
- Etalon reflections from a sample arrive late; a short window either truncates them or forces you to window them out.
- A 60 MHz single-cavity ASOPS system scans roughly 20 ns of optical delay, a range no practical stage reaches.
- Thousands of complete scans per second make averaging practical rather than aspirational.
