Continuous plants run for months between shutdowns, which makes an instrument that drifts, fouls or needs realignment worse than no instrument at all. And a large part of the plant is a classified area.

The problem

Composition is monitored by a lab loop with a turnaround measured in hours, or by an online analyser house that costs more than the unit it serves. Between readings, blend ratio and feed composition move, and the correction is applied to a plant state that has already changed.

The second problem is where the measurement has to sit. An analyser that cannot be installed in a classified area gets installed somewhere convenient instead, with a sample line long enough that what it measures is no longer what is in the pipe.
