Verify the blend where it is blended

A blend is certified by sampling the finished product. If the ratio was wrong, you find out after the whole volume has been made.

The measurement problem

Blending is a ratio problem, and ratio errors are systematic: a metering pump drifting by a few percent produces every batch slightly wrong in the same direction, and nothing in the process record shows it. The finished-product sample confirms the error but not its origin.

Measuring composition in line turns the ratio into an observable. A drift shows up as a slope on the concentration trace long before it becomes an out-of-specification certificate.

What a live reading changes

  • Ratio confirmed continuously rather than certified retrospectively.
  • Metering drift visible as a trend instead of as an eventual rejection.
  • Homogeneity called on a plateau in spectral variance rather than on a fixed mixing time.
  • Multiple units can run in parallel on one computer where several streams have to be watched at once.
